Some of the notable auto giants, such as Honda, Yamaha, KTM and Piaggio have formed a consortium to develop a standardised swappable battery system.

The new swappable battery system is seen as an alternative to the conventional fixed batteries in electric vehicles. It will help to reduce the final cost of the vehicle as well as the charging time of the batteries. Battery swapping is a model wherein the discharged battery of an EV can be removed and exchanged with a charged battery for quick and easy recharge.

The EV market in India is expected to reach over 63 lakh units per annum by 2027, according to a report by Indian Energy Storage Alliance. Considering the rise of EVs usage in the country, swappable battery manufacturing is a potential business idea for MSMEs as well, which constitute a major share of the automobile sector.
