PM Modi Launches India’s First Green Hydrogen Hub under National Green Hydrogen Mission

On January 9, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) Green Hydrogen Hub project at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This marks the launch of India’s first Green Hydrogen Hub under the National Green Hydrogen (NGH) Mission, a significant step towards advancing the country’s clean energy transition.

The Green Hydrogen Hub is being developed through a joint venture between NGEL, the renewable energy arm of NTPC, and the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP). The ambitious project will include 20 GW of renewable energy capacity, 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of green hydrogen production, and 7,500 TPD of green hydrogen derivatives such as Green Methanol, Green Urea, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

This initiative is poised to play a pivotal role in India’s push to achieve its target of 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, aligning with the country’s goals to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the shift towards sustainable energy solutions. The hub is expected to attract an investment of over Rs 1.85 lakh crore and create significant employment opportunities in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

In addition to the Pudimadaka project, NGEL has entered into a similar memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Rajasthan to develop 25 GW of renewable energy projects in the state. The company also plans to explore further collaborations with other state governments to expand India’s renewable energy capacity.

The inauguration of this Green Hydrogen Hub underscores India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in renewable energy innovation, setting a benchmark for sustainable energy production in the region and the world. The project promises to contribute substantially to India’s green energy revolution while boosting local economies and generating new opportunities for a greener future.

Conclusion

The inauguration of India’s first Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka by Prime Minister Modi marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards a sustainable energy future. This pioneering project under the National Green Hydrogen Mission not only sets the foundation for large-scale green hydrogen production but also strengthens India’s commitment to achieving its ambitious clean energy goals. With the collaborative efforts of NGEL and NREDCAP, alongside similar ventures in other states like Rajasthan, India is poised to become a global leader in green energy innovation. The hub’s vast potential for renewable energy generation, coupled with its substantial economic impact and job creation, will play a crucial role in supporting the nation’s transition to a low-carbon economy. This project reaffirms India’s resolve to lead by example in addressing the challenges of climate change while fostering growth and sustainability.
