Sterlite Power Boosts Meghalaya's Power Grid with New 400kV Transmission Line

Sterlite Power has commissioned the Nangalbibra-Bongaigaon 400kV D/C transmission line successfully, an important project for strengthening power infrastructure and providing a stable supply of electricity to Meghalaya. This project is expected to enhance grid stability and enable the hassle-free transmission of over 1000 MW of power from Assam to Meghalaya, essentially easing downstream network congestion and overall power quality in the area.

Key Project Components

Greenfield Substation: The project includes a newly constructed 300 MW transformation capacity substation, designed to accommodate growing energy demands.

Extensive Transmission Network: About 300 cktkm of transmission lines have been installed, covering vital energy corridors.

Strategic 400kV D/C Transmission Line: Spanning the Brahmaputra River, this line runs 123 km from Bongaigaon (Assam) to Nangalbibra (Meghalaya), initially operating at 220kV.

Scalability for Future Demand: The 220/132kV substation at Nangalbibra, equipped with two 160 MVA transformation capacities, is designed to be upgradable to 400kV in the future.

Additional Power Supply Line: A 132kV D/C transmission line covering 19 km from Hatsinghmari (Assam) to Ampati (Meghalaya) ensures an extra layer of energy security.

Ahead of Schedule Execution

The project, awarded through tariff-based competitive bidding in December 2021, was successfully completed ahead of schedule. All required approvals were secured, and critical components were commissioned between September and November 2024, demonstrating Sterlite Power’s commitment to timely project execution.
