The Union Cabinet has recently approved the procurement of 83 Tejas light combat aircrafts at a cost of Rs. 45,696 Crores from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the Indian Air Force.   This is the first “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)” category procurement of combat aircrafts.

The 83 aircrafts consist of 73 LCA Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircrafts and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 Trainer aircrafts. These aircrafts which are designed and developed indigenously are equipped with critical operational capabilities of Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar, Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Missile, Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite and Air to Air Refuelling (AAR).

This procurement of indigenously manufactured aircrafts will help to boost the domestic defence manufacturing industry. The HAL would work with 500 domestic companies including MSMEs in the designing and manufacturing of these aircrafts. This is a great opportunity for small and medium players in defence manufacturing industry.
